SECURE SCOTLAND ALERTS

In This Alert:

A call to action regarding your vote on 4th July 2024:

Contact your local candidate for their stance on

Nuclear Weapons

We need your help to Make Nuclear Weapons a Red Line

“The Scottish parliament and government oppose the UK’s nuclear weapons in Scotland and Craig and Charlie agree that Scotland needs MPs who are unambiguous about nuclear weapons elimination. MPs who will take the message to Westminster that getting rid of nuclear weapons is the only rational response to the risk they pose.

Since no-one has come up with an alternative site for the UK base outside Scotland, we want an independent Scotland that can join the Treaty On the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and have the full backing of the UN and most of its members in getting them removed.

This is a red line issue for progressing nuclear disarmament. In Scotland at least, we have the choice of voting for a candidate who will sign the international Pledge for the Treaty .We won’t vote for those who don’t”.

  We Still Need Replies

With less than two weeks until the General Election, there are still many MPs that are unconfirmed in their stance regarding their support for the TPNW. With the abolition of nuclear weapons being of paramount concern here at Secure Scotland, we kindly ask for your help to clarify your candidates position on the issue. As an organisation we can ask them, but the people they will listen to are their potential constituents - the people that will vote for them. So we need all of you to write to your candidates.

 Priority

While we have established a comprehensive database which outlines whether candidates are in support of signing the ICAN Parliamentary Pledge, there are still candidates in several key constituencies who have not established a clear stance on the issue of nuclear weapons. We would therefore be immensely grateful if all our supporters, particularly those in the following constituencies could write to their candidates:

Central Ayrshire

North Ayrshire and Arran

North East Fife

Rutherglen

West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine

 What Does This Achieve?

Getting replies from candidates is only the beginning, this not only allows for us to update our database on nuclearban.scot/people and parliament - which provides voters with a quick way to see if their candidates are in support of nuclear arms - it also acts as an accountability mechanism after the General Election. If voted into Westminster, we will then follow up on these promises from MPs to ensure that their pledge leads to a discussion about the TPNW at the UK level.

Our message is clear: nuclear weapons are a red line, and if candidates do not agree to sign the pledge to support the TPNW, nuclear disarmament supporters will not vote for them.  It looks like the end of Tory rule at Westminster, but let’s make sure it’s also the end of politicians who don’t understand that in Scotland, nuclear weapons are

a red line.

Please, will you use the data on the nuclearban.scot/people and parliament page to write to your own constituency candidates and ask them to sign the pledge? The website is for all the ICAN partners and is hosted by Scottish CND. There is a model letter here, and more information in the ‘What’s occurring’ section on the home page. We are publishing the position of all candidates on the site – so your MP’s name will be there with our recommendation not to vote for candidates who won’t sign.

Writing the emails need not take too much of your time, and we really believe that your response to this request will make a huge difference to Scotland’s future.

Please copy secretary@banthebomb.org into your request, and also forward any responses.
